Beate is now at the end of her three month residency in Vienna. Along with her fellow residency artists she has had a show last week and will continue next week.

The Bundesministerium für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur invites you to see the works of Beate Frommelt (Liechtenstein), Denitsa Mandieva (Bulgarien), Sigurrós Svava Ólafsdóttir (Island) und Iskren Semkov (Bulgarien) Monday, 15 March 2010, 18:00. Exhibition Rooms, Concordiaplatz 2, 1014 Wien.
The artists Beate Frommelt, Denitsa Mandieva, Sigurrós Svava Ólafsdóttir und Iskren Semkov are current Artist-in-Residence at The Bundesministeriums für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur.
Before the artists return to their individual homes they will show works created during their stay in Austria. The Exhibition is from 16.-18. and 22.-26. March 2010. Workdays open 10:00-17:00.

“When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion” - an Ethiopian Proverb.

Well ‘Tate the Biscuit’, has the makings of a roaring success. This exhibition displays a huge collection of street artists, conceptual artists, installation artists, painters, graphic illustrators and photographers, who all come together under the roof of Shoreditch Town Hall to create interpretations of proverbs and phrases.

In room after room, juxtaposed artwork covers more than 15,000 sq feet - Even the walls breathe out a creative essence of their own making. One minute you are in a room full of glowing polystyrene pods – next you move into a room crammed with installation petals - move onwards and ponder the life size sculpture of a seven year old boy created in green fibreglass - whilst beckoning you from the corner of yet another room is a strange doll with many arms. ‘Tate the Biscuit’ is a kaleidoscopic display showcasing the best of contemporary British street art.

You can also view a huge selection of limited edition prints such as a Panda in a bar, a Muslim bride, from the banal and everyday to high fashion. This show is an extraordinary roundabout which has many roads that lead you into an ‘Aesthetic Urban Vision’, the journey can’t be missed!

The title of this panel discussion was 'Who is Art For?' and was organized by two of our MA artists, Brian Putnam and Nathan Eastwood, to run alongside our final MA Fine Arts Show at Byam Shaw. On the panel were Ingrid Swenson, director at Peer Gallery, Andrew McGettigan, research office at Central Saint Martins, Nick Lambrianou, lecturer, artist and writer, Mick Finch, artist, writer and lecturer at CSM, and Adam Knight, artist and recent RCA MA graduate. Although a little shy at the beginning the discussion warmed up towards the middle and had a very fine ending (at which point it should have continued).

To recap:
The question ‘Who is Art for?’ is a question of how artist, artwork and audience communicate with one another and for what purposes. In exploring their relationships the discussion could focus on what connects them – a variety of languages that depend on the setting: University, Studio, Gallery, Museum, etc. The way language and context interact would seem to determine the intimate relationship of the artist to his or her raw materials and on an institutional level the relevance and value of an artist, an artwork or an audience as a cultural or economic force. The product of both of these interactions shapes contemporary art, informing and being informed by the conditions of Modernity. These conditions are continuously shifting and being qualified as post, super, alter, etc.

Our MA show is a threshold for us as young artists moving from our university practice to our professional practice. As such, it is a moment of reflection on every level of what it means to be an artist. The question ‘Who is Art for?’ is deeply implicated in how an artist approaches his or her work.

17 Ingredients: Measures of Autonomy is a group exhibition showcasing the work of recent MA graduates from Byam Shaw College, London. The exhibition at Studio One is the first to present works by the artists in a space independent from the college, suggesting new directions for each practice, each one part of a thriving whole.
The show is the result of a productive process that has involved, by necessity, a collaborative approach to working. At the same time the artists have been engaged in refining a sense of autonomy in their work – in advance of its presentation within the wider context of visual culture – thus ensuring an exceptional richness to the mix. Their working processes have culminated in a shared practice of locating and examining the meaning produced by their works – a meaning that always oscillates between transparency and dissolution.
Just as intellectual and creative exchange exists amongst the artists, this flux in meaning is experienced across and between the works in the show.
17 Ingredients: Measures of Autonomy highlights the transition of the artists’ practice from within the institution to the outside world. It treads a line between finding shared themes, while also highlighting the problems in doing so with such a seemingly disparate group of artists. The exhibition highlights the almost arbitrary way in which the artists have found themselves thrown together but, conversely, how they are essential elements to the collective outcome.
A fully illustrated catalogue, with essays by Shama Khanna, Dean Kenning and Chris Kul-Want, will be published to accompany the exhibition. Studio One is open Thursday to Monday, 11am to 6pm.

“I decided not have full control of the images.
The method I’m using Paintings was intentionally developed in order to obstruct me to predicting in full the final image of the work. The process leads the work to me.
The size of my body and gestures are defining the surface space. The action of dripping paint in the surface becomes prove of my existence; the marks of a certain body inhabit a certain space in a specific time.
For the reason that I’m not actually in full control of what’s happening sometimes I feel that I’m allowed to participate in a ritual, a dialog between the gesture, the surface and the canvas.
Some symbols impose themselves as part of my vocabulary, and I'm now exploring them in an intuitive and expressive way. In Paints and Printed Monotypes.
As evidence of life, and testimony of my actions, the work became a way to immortality in a mortal world.”

My work consists of three-dimensional constructions and photography. I create environments functioning as frames for my performances, yet the constructions also can stand alone. I refer to them as dreamscapes. Fictional landscapes part-way between materiality and immateriality. Earlier trained as landscape architect, I see my artwork as communicating and intervening with its surroundings. Usually I start with building models of wood or fibreglass to work out dimensions, angles, shadow and light. I see my work being paintings in a space, as three-dimensional still-lifes. Dissolving and blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction, between the inside and outside.

In the studio, I get completely lost in the moment. I forget time, I forget myself. At hand is a plethora of materials including steel, wood, styrofoam, expanding foam, rubber, stones as well as a collection of different found objects including bicycle tyres, car parts, various bits from vacuum cleaners, spin dryers, chairs, wooden banisters and a range of stretchy fabrics, including different coloured spandex, powernetting and sheet latex.

I bring these different materials together, and through various processes, they are transformed. I try to develop processes that are unpredictable and not entirely controllable so that the outcome is a surprise. In this respect, the reading of the work is in its making and I’m fascinated by the apparent ability of materials and objects to retain a temporal quality of process. To some extent, through the making process, the work discovers itself.

My current studio focus is developing processes that will generate structure. I have been enveloping objects and different materials in stretchy fabrics. Through the interplay of found objects, material and fabric, work is produced beyond preconception.

The transformations move towards the unknown and the work has a non-identity, fugitive quality. There is also a sense of the absurd in the work inspired by writers such as Samuel Beckett, Flann O’Brien and Luigi Pirandello. The found object suggests a narrative but it is also considered as a historical artefact suspended in the potential fluid movement of the fabric; an interesting tension which I plan to develop further.

I am interested in how the mind sees and how the hand paints, how images are selected from the surrounding world and from memories, and how these fragments coalesce and collide and form new “things”. Scrambled categories and shifting viewpoints suggest a different kind of visual attention, a wide-open field of awareness. Negotiating form through material requires that I follow the logic of the paint, sometimes battling with the materials before the elusive image emerges. I often use previous paintings as a starting point, over painting and revealing selective passages that in turn suggest a new structure. I cannot presume to know the form before making the painting but I can try to be on hand when the barriers lift.

The mental state when making drawings is most commonly one of total absorption, a withdrawing and removal of attention from anything other than the drawing; the sense of draw, meaning to extract. The world is reduced to a piece of paper and becomes a depository of thought.

The objective for the use of measurements as part of my aesthetic is to start thinking beyond the picture as an autonomous thing and to start thinking about the gallery as a whole.
My work uses the architecture of the gallery as the support, it is not about a critique of an architectural structure but an interest in the phenomenology of a person’s relational position to its space, art-objects presented and the interconnections between the art-objects, and their relationships to the viewer, and the gallery as a unit. The formula: painted object + measurements in pencil + white walls + active spectator + gallery = one unit, a single whole.

The thematic of "mapping the human skin" determines my recent artwork which approaches different ages in relevance with the environmental space. I am interested in the slow building up of the surface through multiple layers and I pay close attention to graduations in tone and texture. The human skin in my artwork contradicts to the "porcelain skin" that we see on the magazine covers. If you paint a scar on the "complexion" of your canvas, it can be beautiful; it becomes a part of its identity.

Because we want you to be in the know and updated on our whereabouts we are writing to let you know that the Byam Shaw MAstars (to borrow an expression by dear Maurice) are currently very busily in the process of preparing for our MA show. As is very usual, common, to be expected, and certainly has its learning aspects, the preparations are messy, muddy, complex, with lots of misunderstandings and variations of opinions, but nevertheless an exciting process and might even tie us together even more as a batch. We are dealing with all aspects of what it means to put on a show single handed, and we are proud to say that when it really matters we are all committed, in our own ways of course, and determined to make this a memorable and distinguished one.
